Heavenly Tang Tea
Chicken and Mushroom Crepes
French-style Green Beans
Bing Cherry Salad Mold
Zucchini Bread
Wacky Cake

This was my favorite meal to date. The 70's saw a continuation of the health food craze, the start of salad bars (does anyone remember those Souper!Salad! restaurants? I LOVED those!) and the cookbook itself had pages and pages of dessert recipes. Not only did I pass on having a dessert buffet for dinner , I passed on the lemon bars for dessert..which if you know me at all you know that is huge. Brunch was hugely popular in the 70's (so the book said) and so that is the direction I went.

The breakdown...

HEAVENLY TANG TEA - Or what I would call Russian Tea or Friendship Tea growing up (and Jeremy calls this Spiced Tea). I LOVED this growing up so was all to excited to serve it to the kids. They weren't into it though. 😞 Ryan said it tasted too much like Apple Cider. I don't see the problem. No matter though...more for me. I've been curling up with a book and cup of tea every afternoon and enjoying it.

CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM CREPES - Sounded classy. I started out with so much hope and optimism, even though I've seen many a Chopped contestant brought down by a crepe. The first one was a total fail, but things improved and by the end I was envisioning me making crepes for breakfast every morning. (Not really, but definitely something I could do again.) These were SO GOOD. I think I might have eaten three that morning. Ryan was equal in his enthusiasm for the dish (and I actually didn't get any leftovers because he ate them all). Christopher pulled all his mushrooms out and ate his fine and Ana took her obligatory "thank you" bite and then asked if that was enough to get dessert.

FRENCH- STYLE GREEN BEANS - I'm sure these would have been about what you would expect from green beans if I had remembered to buy them at the store. When I realized my error at 9 am, I decided to just leave it off. I wasn't making a special trip to the store for something only Ryan and I were going to eat.

BING CHERRY SALAD MOLD - The nicest thing about this was that I made it the day ahead and there was less to do the morning of. None of us were crazy about it at all. Maybe we are jello'd out from all the jello based foods from the last six decades. True confessions...I fished out all the cherries and ate those before I tossed the rest of it. (Yes mom, I did).

ZUCCHINI BREAD - What's not to love. And in my book, the only real way to eat zucchini. It made two loaves so I've got another loaf in the freezer.

WACKY CAKE - I pulled this brunch menu right out of a menu in the book, and it actually called for a Whiskey Cake and I wasn't too keen on feeding my kids Whiskey Cake before lunch. Or any time for that matter. I realize all the alcohol cooks out...but there was just something about it. So I went with Wacky Cake. For those of you who don't know what Wacky Cake it, it's actually super fun. You mix up the dry ingredients in baking dish and make three wells. You add to each one, vanilla, oil and vinegar. Then you pour water over the whole thing and mix it up in the dish. Throw it in the oven and you've got an AMAZINGLY moist cake. Ana made the cake and she loved being able to help and then proudly serve her daddy and brothers a cake SHE made. You may notice there are no pictures of the cake beyond this one. This is because "someone" ate too much too fast and there wasn't any to take a picture of.

If you look at that plate and think "That's a lot of gluten for someone who is gluten free", you would be right. It was a lot. And yes, I ate it all. And yes, I paid for it later. No, I did not regret it. I would totally do it again. This is is my problem. 😕

And while I was busy dirtying up every single dish/pot/pan/plate in my kitchen, this was going on out the kitchen window...
Brunch and a show...(Good thing I wasn't planning on going anyway, their big truck had me parked in all day.)

I kind of wanted to pull of a whole disco theme for myself...really scar the kids for life, but I already had a picture of me LIVING in the 70's...

Dressed up, with my purse, ready to go shopping...not a whole lot has changed in 40 years.
